And it’s gone

On Wednesday I had to be at the hospital again for my gallbladder removal. Having surgery twice in 2014 was never really my intention, but these gallstones were bitches and the attacks were very painful. So on Wednesday I had to get up early in order to be at the hospital in Beverwijk on time. I had to be present around 9 am, but I knew that I had to do another bloodtest before I could have the surgery so we decided to arrive at 8 am instead. That way we could avoid the rush hour traffic as well.gallbladder 01The actual surgery department where I was supposed to stay was too full, so I got my own room at the gynecology ward instead. It was really quiet there, so that wasn’t too bad. I thought it was a bit odd to be there, but my neighbor turned out to be a boy who was supposed to be at the children’s department. Yes, the hospital was a little busy this week. No worries, I got a bed and the nurses were super sweet so I had nothing to complain about while I was there.

I got pain medication and a tranquilizer before my surgery. I had to wait a few hours before they brought me to the OR, but I was sleeping, so time was flying. Before I knew it, I was on my way up. I knew the surgeon already from my previous surgery and he still remembered me (I guess that happens when you’re in the hospital for six days?) They gave me a drip in my hand and I was ready to go.

gallbladder 02I remember that waking up after surgery was awful in April, but I told the anesthetist how much I hated that and he told me that there was something he could try for me.  I am glad he did, and that I told him, because this time I actually woke up about 30 minutes after surgery and I was able to talk to the nurses at the recovery ward. That was less scary. It was still painful though, but that might be normal after surgery. I must say that I had underestimated this surgery, because I thought it would be less painful. Yes, I am fitter than I was 8 months ago and therefore I felt much better and I was able to get up faster. At the same time it was still super painful. The good thing is, that this time it’s only the right side of my abdomen that hurts instead of my whole abdomen. That makes it slightly easier to deal with the pain. Still they gave me some morphine here and there during the first 24 hours so I could sleep.

While I was there I got two visitors. My boyfriend Huib came over and later I also saw my friend Anita. It was really nice to see some familiar faces and have someone to chat with. I mean, it’s nice to have a quiet room so you can relax and rest a lot, but on the other hand I don’t really like being alone that much. Glad that I could still chat on my phone as well, where would I have been without the internet? Hmmm, maybe I would actually read a whole book then?

gall bladder 03

While I was in the hospital I have been taking lots of pictures, so I could keep people updated on how I was doing. Including the food this time, because I was actually allowed to eat. In the evening I got endive with potatoes, meat and cherry custard. That was okay. Although I am not a fan of cooked endive, I prefer it raw to be honest. In the morning I asked for crackers with cheese and kiwi fruit which is always nice. So food wise I was fine.

As you can see, this experience was MUCH better than the one I had earlier this year. I am back home now. Still experiencing some pain, but otherwise I am fine. No complications this time. I really hope that I will be fit again in a couple of weeks.

Yesterday Huib and I went shopping in Eindhoven. Not that I really needed anything, but I do love shopping. So I came home entirely happy with my new blue skirt with polka dots with a matching tights and some other stuff. The happiness didn’t last very long because before we were back home I started to have cramps in my upper abdomen. What was that?! I decided to ignore it at first, because usually pain goes away on its own, but this time it didn’t. When it became too much (around 9.15 pm) I called the doctor and scheduled an appointment for 10 pm. Before I was even dressed the pain became worse and I was rolling on the floor while crying that I was going to die soon. This hurt almost as bad as when I just woke up from my surgery. Huib got me in the car and drove me to the doctor.

When we arrived they wanted me to pee in a cup (I was pretty sure this wasn’t a bladder infection, but okay, whatever floats your boat…) and then wait in the waiting room. I didn’t have to wait though as the doctor was already there. He checked my pee (which was totally fine, like I told them already) and then he wanted to examine the abdomen. It took him about two seconds to find out what was going on. He was like “does it hurt when I press here?” and I responded with a scream and that was it. Yes, it was a gall bladder attack. I might have gall stones or something else, but there was nothing he could do for me right now. Excuse me, mister, I was in pain at that moment and not allowed to have any pain medication because of my gastric bypass. “We are not going to anything until Monday ” wasn’t exactly what I expected to hear at that point.

I am glad that the pain became less and less after that until it reached a level where I can deal with it without pain medication. I could even sleep through the night. I did decide to make this a lazy Sunday, because apparently my body is not in the mood do deal with anything right now. Right now it’s alright and I am not sure if I still want to call the hospital tomorrow to get an ultrasound and all to check what was going on. On the other hand I don’t want to experience this again, so maybe I should not be so stubborn and just let them check it out. I really hope that this was the first and the last time it was happening, but I am not sure if I will be that lucky.

So yeah, the troubles that come with having a gastric bypass surgery aren’t always nice. I knew before I did it that this could happen and that it is is quite common. On a positive note, I did lose 2 lbs this week and I do feel good about that.
